P4(d) Following Production Processes

Meaning & Purpose : I will show the full diary detail for the whole filming process. Furthermore, I will demonstrate how I use different combination of camera to achieve range of style which match the advertisement.

I had fully followed to my storyboard while filming. Below is my screenshot to show how different camera setting can carry out effects to audience.

Filming diary:
22/10/2016 On that day, I had decided I will be only filming indoor scene only which will be the boxing and gym workout. At 7:30pm, I had gathered 2 of the actors in the school. There were no issue of being late as they are all living around the school boarding house. They were well prepared at that time.

During the filming, I found that filming is so much more complicated than I expected. When I first arrived at the squash centre which I will using to film the boxing scene. The echo of the room is so much louder than I expected. Every punch and breathing produce from by the actor are all being recorded. However the light of the room is so much better than I though. It has large amount of light bulb on the ceiling, therefore I don't have to turn up the ISO setting. The result of the footage is surprisingly clear, no noise on the image.  Then we spent the next 50 minutes  to shoot the scene of boxing. Everything went under my plan, both actors didn't got injury. This section of filming had worried me as boxing is a very dangerous sports. The actors can easily hurt them self while filming.

Then we had move on to the gym room, which we had spent nearly 40 minutes inside to of the filming. Although the gym room is old and dark inside, it didn't affect my camera setup. I had mostly decreased the value of aperture and shutter speed instead of the ISO. The reason I did that is tried to keep the quality of the footage and reduce the amount of noise on top of the graphic. The outcome footage had a very good quality. Although the gym room is slightly older than others, it helps me to build up an atmosphere for the scene I took. It definitely looks awesome. For the weight lifting scene, I had ensure my actor able to afford the weight without hurting himself. I had placed a light weight plate on the weight bar so it achieve what audience would like to see and also reduce the change he hurting himself. Again, everything had went under the plan.

29/10/2016 On that day, I had mainly focus on the filming jogging, speed running and photo shooting at the astro. My filming began at 7:00 pm. Before I started my filming, I had kept checking the weather forecast frequently. To 100% ensure there will be no raining during night time, as Canterbury has a very unstable weather. By the time we were filming, the weather was perfect. Although we were filming at the nighttime outside, there were plenty of spot light around the astro. Large amount of light source which means I can turn down the ISO to remain the quality of the footage. Luckily the spot light is not a LED light, which means I don't have to change the fps setting to avoid the "blinking occur" on my footage. As there were no raining before the filming start, the floor was dried so no worry of actors getting slipover while running around the astro.

After 40 minutes of filming, I was able to finish everything I needed according to my storyboard. I had then spend the the other 30 minutes to do some additional photo shooting which gives me enough material to edit for the next unit. The shooting process doesn't take me too long to do it as I had set up the camera pervious when I did my filming. The filming process and footage quality had stuck to my plan and reached my expectation, therefore there is no additional filming is require to redo / to improve some certain scenes.

In this scene, the actor was working out in the gym room. I had used a low angle , low ISO camera setting. Low angle give him a powerful and also build a tension for this scene. By using low ISO, it captured less light which darken the shadow on his body figure. The screenshot above shows the actor seems really muscular and strong.

Also the environment of the gym room is dark and old. It helps to build up the atmosphere of the filming. It gave an idea to audience that "you doesn't need any advance equipment to perform well, you only need a good sports drink that can charge you up."

In this scene, the actor was doing boxing exercise in the squash centre. I had used a low camera angle to film this scene. The low camera angle can make the actor looks powerful & strong. People will fear him and also build a tension for this scene.

As the squash centre is a very bright room, I had choose a low ISO setting. By using a low ISO, it captured less light which darken the shadow bit on his body figure. The actor can looks more muscular than he actually is. More importantly, using a low ISO setting can make give a better graphic quality. The footage can be more clear and easier for editing. In this scene, as boxing is a fast moving sports. I had used a 24 fps to film and capture the moment. Although the gloves and hand area will slightly blurred when it is pause, it will give an impression to audience that he can punch fast and strong every time he drinks the sport drink.

At this scene, I had use a high camera angle to film. As the content was about the actor was extremely tired after load of training exercise. After his training exercise, he was too tired and keened on the floor. The coach gave him a sports drink to refill himself. By using a high camera angle, the actor  weak and tired.

Although there are plenty of light around the astro. I had specially chose a shade area to film this scene because I want half of his face to be darken. By half darken his face and the way how he looks at the bottle. He looks really thirsty and really need something to recharge him. To achieve this scene, I had used a low ISO, low value of aperture and fast shutter speed. All of the setting helps to reduce the reflection light from his face.

For my ending scene, I had filmed my actor drinking under the spot light. In my mind, I want the camera filming in a low camera angle and most of the spot light from the astro will mainly hit on the face and the bottle. Therefore I had filmed my actor under the spot light, face and the bottle directly facing to the spot light. Under the low angle, the actor looks power and gain energy again because drinking the drinks. Audience will think once you drink it, you will feel strong and powerful again. I think this scene clearly give a message to audience that drinking this sports drink will help you to charge you up again !

To achieve the scene, I had use a low ISO setting, low value of aperture and low shutter speed. As a result of this combination, the light is only hitting the bottle, face and body area. The background had remain completely black. Audience can now only see the actor drinking and clearly show the sport drink. I think this is one of the best scene I had took.
